Estimator/Drafter at Huey Works Construction Co.
When I first met with Ms. Shoemaker, she didn’t have reliable transportation or childcare and needed assistance finding work so she could better provide for her young family. I immediately referred her to the Welfare Transition Program, where she received assistance with her job search, transportation and childcare expenses.
Ms. Shoemaker was interested in exploring a new career and needed proper training. She was able to gain hands-on work experience through participation in the Employment Training and Opportunity Program (ETOP), where she was assigned to a temporary position as an Estimator/Drafter for a local construction company. Her strong work ethic was quickly noticed by her ETOP work-site employer, and after just a few short months, she was offered a permanent position where she works as an estimator/drafter.
In August 2014, Ms. Shoemaker was selected to receive a $500 scholarship for her outstanding dedication and program achievements. Each year, the Society of Human Resources Management donates five $500 scholarships to deserving WTP participants who have overcome significant barriers to employment.
“Ms. Shoemaker was selected to receive a scholarship because of her positive attitude and strong will to succeed. There was no quitter in her…She acted like a survivor regardless of her struggle and was always willing to work hard.” – Career Advisor, Julia Lockhart
